Ideally situated in the San Fernando Valley, Tarzana is located on the site of a ranch that was once owned by author Edgar Rice Burroughs. The area received its name from Burroughs’ fictional character, the jungle hero “Tarzan.”
In 1909 the area was purchased by the LA Suburban Homes Company. The LA Times founder, General Harrison Gray Otis, personally invested in the area and acquired 550 acres in the center. Later in 1919, Edgar Rice Burroughs had relocated to the area from Illinois as they were keen on the ideal climate. Within a month Burroughs had purchased the land from Otis and eventually divided it up for residential development. Today, Tarzan has evolved and grown to be home to roughly 40,000 residents.
